How’d you get into bikes? : 
Ten years ago, fixed-gear bikes were really popping in the Japanese street culture. Being a teenager at the time, it was easy for me to build, customize and express myself through those kinds of bikes because of their simplicity and that’s how I got hooked on bikes.
I was super obsessed with the clothing that the bicycle messengers, skaters, and BMX riders wore in the early 2000s. I was very influenced by them and I became interested in the non-sporty side of bicycles through the culture. And here I am now, working as a bike mech.

自転車に興味を持ったきっかけは？:
10年以上前に、日本ではトラックバイクがストリートカルチャーでブームになった。その時はティーンエイジャーだったしフィックスドギアはシンプルだったからいっぱい自分の自転車を改造したり作って乗って表現したりしたのがきっかけ。
2000年代のその時日本で走っていたバイシクルメッセンジャー、スケーター、BMXライダー、洋服屋がスーパーカッコよくて、彼らの影響もたくさん受けて、スポーツでは無い自転車から興味を持った。
自分で色々自転車を触るうちに、時代もジャンルも隔てなく自転車に興味が出て来て、今バイクメカニックになっちゃった。

Tell us about your Surly Bike(s): 

The Midnight Special is my latest build.
I put on a suspension fork and a dropper post on it, which turned the bike into what I think is the sickest dirt drop road bike!! I can ride fast through any kind of road known to existant with this bad boy!! I’ve been riding the double tracks in Chiba and Yamanashi a lot lately.
You can’t turn a trail bike into a road bike, but I think you can turn a road bike into a trail bike!! 
The Midnight Special is amazing, I love it. I also recently got the Pacer frame so I’m planning to build that as a classic dirt road bike.

I also ride the 1x1 with a suspension fork which is old as an antique I got from a friend of mine.
The Surly crew cast a spell on me at the Ratride 2018 that was held in Minneapolis. I’ve been obsessed with the 1x1 ever since. I couldn’t forget the amount of fun I had at Ratride, I just had to get my own 1x1 frame. I managed to find one in my size, so I borrowed money from my co-worker and bought it immediately. (I paid my co-worker back soon after btw)
I think it’s the perfect bike for the single track trails in the small mountains of Japan, even though it’s the year 2022. Following the tradition, I run it with a singlespeed set up with  26x3” tires. I’m having a ton of fun with it so far.

10 years ago, when track bikes were huge, I had a Keirin frame and a Steamroller. The Steamroller can fit up to 35c tires, so I did try a lot of tricks and did so many experiments on that thing!
I swapped to the Landing Gear Fork from SE, I tried the Manitou Suspension fork, put 40c tires and welded gussets on the downtube, and many other weird things…
I broke my first Steamroller when I did a 2-meter drop, and bought another one 10 years later. I did a lot of things on that one as well. I got older, so I wasn’t doing that much of crazy stuff to it, but my inner child whispered into my ears, which motivated me to challenge myself and it lead to my 650B conversion experiment. I learned a lot of things from it so I’m psyched I tried it! People have different opinions, but I love the way the 650B Steamroller looks! It’s a bit scary riding off road considering the BB drop, but I think it’s a sick dirt single commuter. It’s that kind of bike that makes you want to ride with a can of beer in one hand.
I also want to try out putting a banana seat, cruiser bar and coaster brakes…

Anyhow, these are the three bikes that made me love Surly bikes and what keeps me want to continue learning about your philosophy. The Surly rabbit hole is actually really deep.

midnight specialは自分の1番新しいサーリー。
サスペンションをつけてドロッパーシートポストをつけて自分が思う最強のダートドロップロードになったよ‼︎どんな道もスピーディーに走れる最高にご機嫌な相棒‼︎千葉や山梨のダブルトラックで遊んでる。
トレイルバイクはロードバイクにはならないけど、
ロードバイクはトレイルバイクに出来るかも‼︎（哲学）

ミッドナイトスペシャルが凄く良くて、最近ルーツだと思うペイサーのフレームも手に入れた。クラシックダートロードにする。

マウンテンバイクは1×1を骨董品のサスペンションを貰ってつけて乗っています。
2018年にミネアポリスでRATRIDEに乗らせてもらったおかげで呪いに掛かった。
（surlyはじめ、all city.salsa.QBPの人、ミネアポリスで出会った人本当にありがとう‼︎人生で暫定1番の楽しい場所だった‼︎）
RATRIDEが忘れられなくて、古い1×1をネットオークションで見つけて同僚に金借りて買ったよ。（お金はすぐ返した。）
日本の小さな山のシングルトラックにはちょうどいい自転車だと思う。2022年の今だけど。
伝統に則ってシングルギアで、26×3インチのタイヤでタイトなトレイルで遊んでいます。
10年以上前にトラックバイクブームの時に競輪フレームとスチームローラーを乗っていた。
フィックスドギアで38cが履けるフレームだったからいっぱい色んな改造とトリックにチャレンジしたよ！
（SEのランディングギアフォークを付けたり、マニトウのサスを付けたり、40cのタイヤ履かせたりダウンチューブに補強を溶接したり…。）
2mをドロップオフした時に壊してしまって、また10年後か後にもう一度買って、これもいっぱい色んな形にした。大人になったから少しスマートなカスタムをしてたけど若い時のチャレンジングスピリットが疼いて650bタイヤを履かせれるかトライしたらいっぱい勉強と気づきを得た‼︎フィーリングはそれぞれだけど僕は見た目が凄い好き‼︎オフロードではスリリングなペダルポジションだけど、良い感じのダートシングルコミューターになったよ。ビール片手に乗りたくなるろくでなしバイクだね。
バナナシートでクルーザーバーでコースターブレーキにしてみたい。
その三台のおかげでSURLYを凄く好きになって、あなた方が思う哲学を分かる為に沢山研究している。
SURLYは実は奥が深い。

If you could ride anywhere in the world, where would it be?: 
The Japanese trails and unpaved roads I have yet to discover, the path leading to the mountains with beautiful scenery, and through the traffic of each city. I want to be able to guide through all the fun trails and all sketchy spots to the visitors who come to this small island country, so I want to see every area of Japan with my own eyes and ride through the lands of Japan with my own body.
I’d also love to visit Minneapolis again and ride all the trails of America I see on the internet.

世界中のどこでもライドができるならば、どこに乗りにいきたい？なぜそこ？：
日本のまだまだ沢山あるトレイルと未舗装路、素晴らしい風景が見れる山々へ続く道と、各都市のトラフィックかな。
日本に来た世界中の人にこの小さな島国でも、自転車で素晴らしい所やスリリングな所に行けるよと教えれるように、自分の目で体で日本中を走り回ってみたいな。
あと、あなた達のいるミネアポリスにもう一度行きたい。インターネットで見ているアメリカの沢山のトレイルと未舗装路を走ってみたい。
